Five Things You Can Do with Microsoft Office Mobile

Hidden away among Microsoft’s impressive lineup of mobile solutions is an oft-overlooked app called, simply, Office. I know what you’re thinking: Office is a suite of software, not an individual app, right? While it’s true that the Office moniker is commonly used in reference to Microsoft’s bundled software, Office is also the name of an individual app available through Microsoft 365.

Confusing name aside, the Office app is a powerful tool that enables users to perform a variety of specialized tasks previously possible only with expensive standalone software. This blog will walk you through several of the most useful functions you can perform with this versatile tool.

To get started, simply download Office to your mobile device from the App Store or Google Play. Then, open the app and sign in to your Microsoft 365 account. With that out of the way, let’s get to the good stuff …

1. Sign a PDF from Your Phone

Before you get started, make sure that the PDF you need to sign is saved on your phone or to your Microsoft 365 account. Then, open the Office app and click “Actions.” Select “Sign a PDF.” Then, locate the document and tap to open. Next, tap where you want your signature to appear on the document. The phone will rotate and a signature input field will appear. Use your finger to draw your signature. Then click “Done.” The signature will be imposed on top of the PDF; move and resize as necessary.

2. Convert an Image to Text

Open the Office app and select “Actions.” Tap “Image to Text.” Grant the application access to your camera if you haven’t already. Then, take a picture of the document you’d like to convert to text. The app will crawl the document and display the text on screen. From here, you can save, share, or edit the document text.

3. “Scan” an Image with Your Camera

Open the Office app and select “Actions.” Then tap “Scan to PDF.” Grant the application access to your camera if you haven’t done so already. Then take a picture of the document you’d like to convert to PDF. On the next screen, match up the four dots with the corners of the document. The app will automatically straighten the document and create a flat PDF.

4. Convert a PDF to Word

Before you get started, make sure that the document is saved on your phone or to your Microsoft 365 account. Open the Office app and select “Actions.” Then tap “PDF to Word.” Select the PDF that you’d like to convert. The app will convert the file and open the new Word doc for saving, sharing, or editing.

5. Convert a Photo to PDF

Open the Office app and select “Actions.” Tap “Pictures to PDF.” Grant the application access to your photos if you haven’t done so already. Then select the image that contains the document you’d like to convert to PDF. Select crop if the document is askew. Then, match up the four dots with the corners of the document you’d like to capture. The app will automatically straighten the document and create a flat PDF.
